Hmmm, I've decided to keep to a basic 24-120mm kit lens on my D850 - I'm a wildlife photographer and these 2 days are meant to be a holiday so I don't want this hanging over me for 3 stadium visits. Basic lens I know, but at least I can crop the D850 tight if I need to, but there's more than...

The Alexander Stadium Tuesday and Wednesday. I've decided not to take my 500mm PF, although its exactly 30cm when mounted on the camera. I have an 80-400mm which when extended is also 30cm on camera excluding hood. Do you think that's too risky?

Oh, another thing - they say "No professional and broadcast equipment including tripods and monopods" - are monopods only allowed to be used by pros? They tell us that you can only take one bag in, and that mustn't be > 25L in capacity. Reading what they say about tripods, monopods and bag...

Thank you for your replies. I have to admit I read it as physical length. You don't measure the focal length in centimetres. I guess they haven't realised that Nikon make a 500mm lens that is so small thanks to the PF construction; I presume they have tried to make a direct comparison between...

Do you save RAW and JPeg? or just RAW?

If you're using Lightroom and Photoshop there is a trick that gets round this banding problem. If you export a photo from Lightroom as a JPG you can get the banding. However if you export the RAW as a DNG, then load the file into Photoshop using the RAW converter, and then save as a JPG you...

Do you save RAW and JPeg? or just RAW?

If they can be converted then you're not getting the RAW information back. When I said you can't convert back to RAW I should have said you can't reclaim the information that would be stored in the RAW file, sorry for the confusion.

Do you save RAW and JPeg? or just RAW?

I've just re-joined this forum and the replies to this topic have fascinated me! You have probably come to the conclusion that there is no right/wrong answer. A couple of things I don't think have been mentioned... 1) Remember the future. RAW can be converted to JPG. JPG can't be converted to...

Do you save RAW and JPeg? or just RAW?

Never shoot JPGs. Mind you with a Nikon D850 the RAW files are so large its tempting use JPGs! No, I never use JPGs - too much work is done for you by the camera manufacturer, assumptions are made. Try it yourself, if those assumptions are always spot on then fine, but my personal opinion is...

How do you shoot birds in flight?

My views on this... 1) Find the right location, know the subject, and try and pre-empt what the bird will do. Watch how birds move just before they take off. That little flinch of their muscles might give the game away. Point the camera at the right spot, focus it at the right spot and don't...

Creating an artificial natural environment for the garden birds.

I'm working on this myself. I have a small tree and some old/rotten branches and logs that I pick up every so often. Birds like this because they hold loads of bugs for them to eat. I got a few new birds after scattering the logs randomly close to my tree. But, and this is a big BUT, the best...

    Commonwealth Games Photography

Is anyone going to the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham this/next week? I am, and I want to take my camera. According to the list of restrictions you can take "personal use cameras or lenses of no more than 30cm in length". I have a Nikon D850 and a Nikon 500mm PF lens. The lens without the...

    Tripod Quality

Thanks for all your answers. I've already got a Neewer heavy duty 77" aluminium alloy tripod, which is great for long telephoto lenses at home; this cost £120, so I need a tripod now to carry round woodlands using my DSLR and wide angle lens, hopefully at a cost no more than £100. Whenever you...

    Tripod Quality

I'm looking to buy a new tripod for landscape photography. Needs to be light-weight, sturdy, and not expensive. All look decent enough on Amazon, but are there any tripods people have had problems with, meaning I should steer away from them?
