I've used both OEM and 3rd party and never had any problems. The 3rd party ones are plastic v. OEM magnesium alloy frame though which leads to a cheaper feel and potentially flexing.

Hi Woodsy, thanks for the info. They are (unfortunately) the push/pull with a single ring for zoom and focus so not the most desirable unless I get my gold marker pen and scrawl AF-S on them...:naughty:

When you say D40/x, D60 etc., what does the etc. stand for? Is this something to do with the AF motors being in the body not the lens? I really know 'nada' about Nikons so please treat me like an idiot :)

That looks as good as it gets. The serial numbers of mine are 444100 and 553434 so sometime between 1992 (400490) and 1997 (563085) according to that site.
