I've yet to learn all the tricks with my mkIV (bought second hand from this very forum) but it's peerless in comparison to my old 1D mkIIN which is renown for having trouble-free AF and good low ISO image quality.

It's a great bag, compared to my previous CCS and Lowepro bags it's far better in terms of storage capacity and comfort.

I have an old Yashica MAT tlr that I've not touched for a decade, I'd be interested in seeing how much a service would cost. Knikki, do you mind me asking how much the repair set you back?

The 1D series does go some way to addressing this, you can set the focus tracking sensitivity. I'd suggest renting one for a few days to see how you get on with it, they do take a while to get dialled-in to but once you get your head around the controls you'll love it.

Numerous events I've been to seem to have varying degrees of this, I guess it depends on how attentive the marshalls are, after all we're asked to wear them for safety's sake as well as being easy to spot by all circuit staff. Like yourself and Nick I always wear mine.

Don't get too hung-up on the technicalities, if the optics are good you'll reap the rewards, remember there were times when AF, IS and H&S didn't exist!

As mentioned above the image in the viewfinder would jump as the gyros in the Image Stabiliser system kicked-in, very annoying when all you want to do is pan that rare moment when you're there at the right place at the right time! I find I get more useable shots with Mode II switched off.

I have a 550EX, use it on my 5D and 1D IIn, it's a fantastic bit of kit. It can control a brace of other Canon flashguns too, I'm not sure if the 420EX can do this, may be worth considering this option if you plan to introduce another flash to the mix at some point.

I never use Mode II IS for panning motorsports, tried it a few times with my xxD bodies and it always interfered with my panning. Perhaps it works better when panning slowly . . ?
