Thanks Kevin. I have a Velbon. It's not particularly heavy but I'm worried they might see it as an issue. I would be very grateful for further info but I also take onboard (no pun intended!) your comments about baggage handling.

I have 2 x 8GBs. I'm totally paranoid about being stuck somewhere fabulous without at least an acre of memory! And it still amazes me quite how quickly I can fill up a card. I know they say quality over quantity, but I need the quantity to improve the quality!

Sorry to veer off topic slightly but can anyone tell me whether airlines have the facility to check a tripod at the gate - in the same way, say, as you can for a pushchair? I prefer to only take carry-on but I'm guessing they won't let me take this into the cabin with new security??
