Wouldn't hold too much by the KR review. There are a few fairly fundemental differences between the D80 and D40. In particular the ability to AF with the AF/D range of lenses which the D40 just can't do.

My kids love the polaroid shots. Actually seeing a physical photo instead of looking at them on a screen is such a novelty.

Slow shutter speeds and any suitable flash will give you nice colours and interesting effects. Plenty of background colour and motion blur with the flash freezing the action.

The 35mm 1.8 is a great lens, AF on your D40 and a great length. The 50mm 1.8 won't AF on a D40 neither will the 35mm f2D. The 50mm AF-S 1.4 would do well if you need the extra 3rd of a stop or indeed the Sigma 30mm 1.4 will also AF on your D40 if you are feeling brave (QC issues with Sigma have...
