    Walkabout and Tele lenses

Thanks for the responses guys, some good food for thought already. I already have the 17-40L, which rarely comes off my camera. Given the 24-70L is within my reach, I'm reluctant to save money on the HSM Sigma and take the hit on depreciation and IQ that goes with it, and the older, non-HSM...

    Walkabout and Tele lenses

Hey guys, I'm in the market for two new lenses, a tele for wildlife work and a studio-come-walkabout replacement for my over-loved 28-135 IS. The total budget comes in at about £1400, and for that I've drawn up to possible combinations: -Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 and Sigma 120-400 OS EX HSM or -Canon...

So this new Canon 15-85mm lens

Agreed. The 17-40L is a cheaper buy for landscape work, and the 28-135IS is still a nice enough walkabout lens for half the money, if not quite wide enough on a cropped sensor. Plus I really don't see EF-S lenses as a good investment.

    Manfrotto Question.

FYI, I use 055 legs and the 460MG head and they're a great combo. I far prefer the 460MG to any other ball-head type and find it offers superior stability for landscape work, especially when using ND or IR filters. The 055 legs are far from the lightest though, so if you're only using a small...

    canon 28 - 135 upgrading lens

The 28-135mm IS USM is actually a very decent, and underrated, piece of glass. There are alternatives: various 24-70mm 2.8 lenses, or the 24-105mm L you mentioned, but if your budget is capped at £350 AFTER selling the lens, then you can just about stretch to.... a new 28-135mm IS USM...

New Canon 500d or second hand 40d?

The handling of the 40D/50D simply blows the xxxD range out of the water. Unless you have some very specific requirements that the 500D offers, a secondhand 40D is the better bet, and should last you a fair while longer.

    Just wondering....

I imagine that it's just a 50D kit lens that's been parted from the body somewhere along the line. Great price for a a very under-rated piece of glass though - so long as you're getting good results from it I wouldn't worry too much about the packaging. Oh, and hello!
