Photograph it NOW - boring photos can be interesting

A local Facebook page has a lot of old photos from 20-30-40 years ago, and I often think why don't I have any like that? I like taking night-time photos and when we moved here I took quite a few of local shops and takeaways. It will be interesting to revisit them, if I last long enough....

    Nikon Z* mirrorless

New firmware update (1.40) for the Z5 came out yesterday. I've installed it painlessly. Apparently it improves the AF eye-tracking, amongst other things....

    £200 budget camera?

This really chimes with me, Had an SLR in the 80s, then with children and busy life stuck to bridge cameras, point and shoots etc. In my mid- 50s my eyesight began to deteriorate and I couldn't see the rear screen on my camera. Got myself a cheap DSLR a Nikon 3200 and that wee dioptre knob next...

I really like that. Quite a contrast between the dark and the light.

Mountain Hares in Cairngorms/ Otters on Skye - advice needed

A number of years ago now, and I wasn't there for the photographs, but we took a boat trip near the Skye Bridge and saw quite a bit of wildlife, including seals and otters. The otters were completely unfazed by the boat, happily going about their business.

Here's a review of the new 17-28mm lens, but he also rounds up the other available Z lenses and their usage. He is very keen on the 24-120, indeed at one point I think he says it is his favourite lens. He gives a usage case for it and says it is a good woodland lens. If you don't want to watch...

    Nikon Z* mirrorless

I did. Bought my z5 with a 24-50 kit lens and almost immediately swapped it for a 24-70 bought new. It felt like a decent upgrade. Somebody here linked to a 24-120 on sale on ebay at a decent price and on an impulse I bought it. I kept the 24-70 for a while, but it was never on my camera so I...

    Nikon Z* mirrorless

I'm definitely wanting something a bit longer, but choking on the cost of something like the Z400 or 100-400. Relatively new to this and also have another expensive hobby in cycling. I'm also not very patient, and would be frustrated by a long wait. At the moment I have 24-120, having just sold...

    Why hasn't mirroless taken over?

I'm not sure if I should wade in here, but here goes. It might be rather long-winded, so feel free to move on. Art has always been an alien land to me - despite spending a lot of time in art galleries, and trying to like it. If I have any art ambitions at all, it is to take decent photos...

I really like that first swan one - the focus on the head / neck, the bow wave - it all works really well for me.

Non UK Loire Valley photo opportunities

What are you planning for accommodation? We've camped and caravanned in several places. It would be difficult to go far wrong, but Montreuil-Bellay was a favourite, we've been twice. . There's a decent restaurant at the campsite, providing regional fayre. We stumbled on it by accident...

Daffodils today - with Nikon z5 and 24-120 .lens. Narrow dof and daffodils have a long trumpet. I like that you can see the pollen in the first one. Maybe I need a macro lens, or to practice focus stacking..... duff House 6652 by James West, on Flickr duff House 6649 by James West, on Flickr

    Flickr - worth the cost?

I hate subscription models and try to avoid them. I prefer a one-off payment. They're creeping in though, I have a couple of cycling related ones, the creative cloud plan you have and netflix. What would you get for pro? You get 1000 photos on the free one, and you could use cloud storage to...

When work and life gets in the way

Ring fence time. I've spent almost all my life working in care, often doing a lot more hours than I was paid for, but I tried to protect weekends as family time. Get some 'me' time. I was quite active, but not very fit and took to cycling in my late 40s. I lost a lot of weight, became fitter...
