Simple question which I'm sure will warrant some lengthy answers but how much of a difference will IS make for me if i upgrade from my 70-200mm f4. Ive seen it may help to improve the quality of panning shots but I'm not entirely sure whether thats a gimmick and more down to skill and practice...

Just to revive this thread, how would the 70-300mm IS USM compare to the 100-400mm?

It looks like the f/stop ranges between 10 and 20, does that sound plausible?

oftentimes I am maxed out at the 200mm reach, where do I find what I normally shoot at :D

Also, the 100-400mm at over 300mm is going to give better quality than if I were to crop and imag from the 70-200mm right? So in this essence the longer lens will be better at the longer zooms

let me rephrase my question, what advantage would the 70-200mm f2.8 give me over the current f4 :) comparing the same reach

Even for the price of ~£600 looks like a pretty good pick with good length of zoom for me, a quick focus should come in handy for motor racing
