The chap hasn't said what type of motorsport is being shot. For rallying 70-200 would be perfectly adequate.

Agree with above. You're better off waiting until you can double your budget to around the £200 mark, then you're looking at the likes of Sigma 17-70, Tamron 17-50, Canon 17-85 etc. These will offer a noticeable improvement.
