    7d and 24-105 weeather issue

I use the leg of an old wetsuit over my 400mm, waterproofs the lens, also provides extra impact protection (6mm thick)and insulates it from extreme cold which causes condensation. Oneday I will make a neoprene cover for the camera as well, may be good for keeping hands warm too!

Budget wide angle for Canon Full Frame

How about the canon 24mm f2.8 which is an excellent little lens and very wide on a full frame (15mm on a crop). Small, light and sharp, and cheap see.......http://thedigitalpicture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-24mm-f-2.8-Lens-Review.aspx or if you want ultrawide the Samyang 14mm produces excellent...

    lens query

I bought the 400mm for the reason that I thought I would mostly be wanting the longer focal length and after a couple of years I think it was the right choise. The 1.4x converter would still be autofocus at f5.6 on the 300mm.

    Canon 50mm f1.4 vs Canon 85mm F1.8

I have both, 85mm is probably a better build and works out equivalent to a 135mm on a crop frame camera, great (outside?) portrait focal length. I also like the 50mm (85mm Equivalent) again good for portraits. The 24-30mm focal length is a really good allround focal length on the 40d. You will...

Something to replace my Canon 18-55mm IS lens

Canon 28mm f1.8 or 35mm f2, small, light and cheap then take a couple of steps back or forward for your zoom.

canon x2 extender no auto focus??

You can put a bit of tape over two contacts so that your camera dosn't know its there and then autofocus will work but you need good light/contrast otherwise it has trouble locking focus which is not good for your focus motor(this is why it's disabled). Google it and you can find out which...

    Which of the 2?

I had a 500d, then got a 50d which is much nicer and easier to use, though I kept the 500d for quite a while as it's so nice and light and small. Image quality was the same but in use the 50d was faster. Why not get a 50d, quite a lot of improvements over the 40d (screen, 15mp newer, etc) and not...

    Too much lens choice ?

The 135mm L is so nice to use that my 70-200 seems to stay at home a lot these days! If you want something really wide try the Samyang 14mm, I just bought Twists one and its a nice lens once you get used to it's manual focus. 24mm f2.8 is nice on a 5d aswell. I havn't used the 100 L macro but...

    a good prime for 550d

The 24mm f2.8 gives 38mm equivalent on the 550d which is a useful general purpose focal length. Also a nice sharp lens though an older design. Go for about £200 used. Mine got a lot of use on a 500d as a relatively small lightweight combination when I didn't want to carry too much. Also gives a...

    Lens for bird photography

I'll second the canon 400mm f5.6, 200mm is almost always too short for birds, super fast focus, sharp and light.

    Compact to complement my 5D

Buy one thats actually small enough to go in your pocket so you will have it with you, I got the canon s95 and it takes excellent pics, for a compact, same sensor as the canon g_ cameras. Spend a bit more and get the s100 which is the same but a bit faster/ better. I have quite large hands and...

    Canon 300mm +1.4 v Sigma 150-500

I bought the canon 400 f5.6 for my 50d over the 300 as I needed the reach for windsurfing/surfing shots and love it, fast focus and super sharp and I only really have trouble when the light is so bad that it's hardly worth taking pictures anyway! I would love to have an f4 or f2.8 but thats not...

    Fungus?

I wouldn't worry too much about keeping it away from other lenses, there are fungal spores all around us all the time, it's more important to keep it in a dry place as fungus needs moisture to grow. I have a couple of old film camera lenses with a bit of fungus but have left them in strong...

Good IQ compact cameras?/get rid of my dslr? GOT ONE

I bought an S95 6 months ago and it's a brilliant little camera that I use a lot but it's not a DSLR replacement and I could not get rid of mine! The S95 image quality is amazing - for a compact, but no competition when using an SLR. I mostly use the s95 in situations when I would not have a...

Actually just HOW BAD is the 5D II for action/sports...

I just looked at a batch of 120 pics that I took of fast moving windsurfers taken at quite close range sailing towards me down waves with a 5dii and 70-200 f4 using centre focus point and AI servo and I would say that about 90% are in focus so it isn't that bad. I usually use my 50d with a 400mm...
