Long time amateur getting back into it: what should I do about a flash setup?

Hi! In the mid and late 2000s, I had gotten into photography, like a lot of prosumer amateurs. I wisely took a step back from online gear discussions. More recently with the birth and raising of my daughter, I have been enjoying photography again. A lot has changed in terms of software and...

    Help my old man out!

Thanks so much for your help, guys! I've passed them on to my dad. Love this forum!

    Help my old man out!

Thanks. The wider field of view I'm sure is noticeable, but I'm definitely more interested in the colours/lighting/skin tones, etc. moreso than the composition.

    Help my old man out!

My dad asked me a question about some of the photos he's been taking. He went to a party and took pictures with his 4D + 18-135IS. He did not use a flash. Here is a typical (basically, unaltered) jpeg: He met someone else who was using a Nikon with an unknown lens (likely wide-angle) and...

    Lightroom v3 Unable to Export

Thanks! Indeed, my dad did not fully import them (I thought he did). Hard to diagnose these problems from afar!

    Lightroom v3 Unable to Export

Please help my dad! He's using Windows and Lightroom. He's told me that he's been unable to export pictures to jpeg, after importing them (their original format: RAW) He says:

    Shooting video with 7D

I just bought a 7D and while I've been doing photography with digital cameras for a few years now, all the new options and techniques which are required for video shooting is new to me. Do any of you have some online guides for people who are new to video shooting on a 7D?

    Video recording for university lectures

Thanks for the info, Dave. I didn't know about the 7D (I've been out of the loop since getting my 40D). Looking at things quickly on Google, it seems that you're right and a 70D would probably be a cheaper, and just as effective alternative. One of the silly questions I have is whether...

    Video recording for university lectures

I'm a soon-to-be university graduate in maths, and I'll be moving soon to take up a faculty position at an American university. One of the things I always envisioned is to link up the classes I teach, with online video shorts, roughly 10 minutes in length each, which will cover standard...

    Help! Printing black cover

Okay. There is a Staples in around where I live, so I'll see what they can do. Thanks. I've found good guides to bleeding and [url=designing with black[/url]. Do you know what stock would be best for printing this?

    Help! Printing black cover

Oh, thank you. I didn't know this, so I've been using pure black 0/0/0. This doesn't take care of the issue that printers won't be able to reach the borders, but I suppose I can insert a white border if I like. I think I will give photobox a try, first, and see how it comes out as an A4 photo...

    Help! Printing black cover

Because this version will not be the version submitted to the university library. I avoided mentioning the word 'thesis', precisely for the reason that people would start asking me about university guidelines and regulations...but if you want a quick answer, I hope that suffices...

    Help! Printing black cover

Yes...but that's a different matter [university regulations and all that], which was why I avoided mentioning the word, 'thesis'. For the moment, I'm just asking about the all-black cover. I've tried one of the printers around town and their results are streaky at best. You just can't get a...

    Help! Printing black cover

Several years ago, I did try high-end printers, but the results were still streaky. This could have been because I used a glossy finish at the time, but I think it might still be easier to just have it printed as a photo.

    Help! Printing black cover

Basically, the issue is as follows: I have an all-black cover/title page for a manuscript that needs to be printed on A4-sized stock. It is all black, from head-to-toe, with the exception of some white text (about 8-10 lines). The title is currently in PDF (vector format). A normal printer...
