How about something like the Kingston Mobilelite? Transfer from SD to USB and built in battery backup for a mobile device. Can also be used to view / transfer images on a mobile device. Then get some hi how capacity USB 3.0 flash drives which will be cheaper than equivalent SD cards.

A cynical person may say it's to keep the interest alive so it's not all but forgotten about by the time Chris Evans comes up with a new series.

Amazon have it at £275 but an extra £34 to get the flash is a pretty decent deal.

The Sigma 10-20 3.5 is designed for APS-C sensors although it will physically fit full frame bodies (it'll vignette at the wide end). Not sure about rear protrusion though.

The cable car trip is a good experience but not great for photography given the scratched windows, movement of the car and other obstructions. Well worth going though.
