The shutter speed 'rule' is 1/effective focal length - so the 1.6 factor does apparently come into it. I'm not entirely convinced that it makes a difference - but that's what I read.

Yes, but you said you want cheap - 2nd hand on these doesn't seem to be much below a new grey price.

I have the 15-85 and am very happy with it, nice build quality, fast and accurate focus.

Are you comparing a 35mm on a full frame though? He has a crop sensor, so the same as a 50mm on your camera.

I just bit the bullet and bought the 50mm f/1.8 - it's cheap enough, and if I decide I want better it seems to have good residuals! Still think a 35mm is better for me on a crop sensor though, but nice to now have a 2nd lens to play with.
