    Landscape verses portrait

Whichever works on the look your trying to achieve, I do on occassion take shots in landscape because often you can crop a portrait from a landscape if needs be, but not the other way round.

    Beginner Over exposure

Took a quick look at the dandilion picture, if you look at the histogram it is likely to be mainly to the left with a small area to the right of centre (the flower). If it was a "snap" type picture I would possibly just focus on the brighter section of the longer leaf, just to the bottom left...

    Beginner Trying a Flash

If the camera is a a tripod you can set a longer exposure time, hand hold the flash on a relatively lower power output and fire a number of times to "Light paint" the the areas you want to highlight. I prefer the mono version but it is obvious by the highlights that the flash is on camera axis.

    Lightstand Sand Bags

I put pea gravel in zip-lok bag and put that in the sandbag, if the sandbag gets damp just take it out until everything dry

Canon Printer IP8750 7x5 Printing problem

Hi. I have cropped the image to 7x5, also slightly smaller to fit the Canon safe print area; the "image size" has been set in Photoshop to 7x5 inches and the mm equivalent, 240 and 300 dpi to see if it does something. It persist in printing the leadind edge up to the edge of the paper, i.e no...

Canon Printer IP8750 7x5 Printing problem

Hi. As per title, my printer will not print normally a 7x5 picture in "Normal" mode, ie with a border on all sides. I have a ticket raised with Canon but I feel that will be going nowhere. The print will not centre the image on the paper and insists on printing without a border on the Leading -...

Beginner Any recommendations for a new lens

As Jannyfox says the 18 - 135mm is a reasonable lens for a Crop - Sensor body. An additional benefit is that it is IS and STM, which makes it very suitable for video as is it silent and Image Stabilised. It is I feel better to spend your money on good lenses, rather than bodies as the...

Beginner Real World Back Button Focusing?

No, horses for courses. Predictive (may be a new feature) Auto Focus tracking still has the possible issue as discussed previously. When the shutter release is pressed fully the image is captured, end of cycle, finished. To re-establish focus the shutter release needs to be pressed to the half...

Beginner Real World Back Button Focusing?

I use BBF on any camera I have used, why? I think was your question. The "normal" camera operation is that when you press the the shutter release for the first part of the action the camera will obtain focus, and when you complete the press the shutter will operate and take the picture, you then...

    Beginner Canon 400D

The 400D has only 9 focus points, in a diamond pattern plus a centre point. Only the centre point is a "Cross" type the others are either vertical or horizontal. Why does this matter and why is it relevant to the question?, even if you had a rule of thirds grid you could not select a focus...

Beginner Clipping - Help and Advice Please

As most of above regarding clipping. Check the histogram on the back of the camera, it will show if any black or white clipping is occurring. Regarding Lightroom it may not be the whole truth, it will indicate clipping areas with indicators (Red or Blue); but it will have preprocessed your image...

    Beginner Preventing misting and condensation

Tried this in Finland a few years back and as I recall it worked for me. If its cold outside and warm indoors before you come in pop the camera into a large zip seal freezer bag, any condensation will then form on the outside of the freezer bag and not on the camera.
