I was using a Canon 430 ex II with a pair of Calumet radio triggers which have a sync speed of 1/250.
When I went above the max sync speed, I was confused as to why there was banding, but not a complete black off.
Here is a picture as an example at 1/750 sec...

Isn't manual only good for subjects that hold the same position?
And what if I wanted to put the flash in a awkward place like high up - I would then have to climb up each time to adjust it?
I would think having the option of both manual and ettl would cover the most ground?

I ideally want an ettl radio trigger. I think that offers the most flexibility.

I'm looking at getting the 430 EX II as my first flash.
I would mainly be wanting to use it off camera using a wireless trigger.
I realise the 430 ex II can only be used as a slave and not a master.
What is the point of a master?
Doesn't a wireless transmitter take the place...

If I went with the 430 EX II and wanted to use it off camera - on a stand with softbox for example - would that be possible if I used a wireless transmitter like a pocket wizard?

I'm wanting to buy my first flash. Is it worth spending the extra for the 580 or will the 430 be sufficient?
I don't have any other flash guns (at the moment) so the master slave, shouldn't be a problem.
