I have a uv filter on mine. As the hood is very shallow I worry that I will bang the front element against stuff when it's hanging on my shoulder so the filter always stays on. Never had any vignetting problems with it.

I agree with Mitesh. I have the cheapo ebay tubes and use them with an old Pentax 50mm 1.7 lens that has a manual aperture ring. There's a small learning curve to using this approach but you get used to it after a while.

You can only use XD cards in your Fuji. SD and CF cards simply will not fit in the slot.
You can however buy cards with bigger capacities than 512MB. Take a look at www.mymemory.co.uk or www.7dayshop.com for cheap prices on memory.
I use them on my lenses. The benefits outweigh the minuses. It protects my front element from scratches and dirt. I'm happier cleaning the filter than the lens. You'll not have problems with vignetting really, I use a filter on my 10-20 lens without any problems. You must get a decent quality...
I have the Sigma 24-70 and it is a real gem. It is one of my main wedding lenses. With the announcement of a new model with HSM you may find a real bargain of a deal for the older model.
