This is my top favourite explanation :)

    Anyone else use 500px?

This is me: http://500px.com/MelindaCallas/photos I don't use it much though, it's terrifying, and intimidating!

Opinion - Will this be ok for a passport?

Second ones looks better, in my opinion. Gorgeous child :) (and I don't much like children!)

    Bumping into others taking photos

I hate people talking to me when I'm working on something; the attention just embarasses me, really. I'd have hidden too. Maybe he wanted to wait til you'd gone so he could shoot the same scene that you just did. Don't take it personally!

The first time is the best :/

Maybe it is all down to inspiration: the original shot is imbued with whatever I love about the scene, whereas the next ones are calculated. It's supposed to be like that with food too, right? That you can tell if it's been made lovingly or just churned out.

The first time is the best :/

I don't tend to hunt an image; I'll take my camera with me anywhere I go and shoot what interests me. But not being able to better the first image is frustrating as anything! I think I over-analyse possibly. I'll take my first shot and think, wow, that flare right there, I just need more...

The first time is the best :/

New to this forum, so I hope I'm in the right area! I think I'm a point-and-shoot girl at heart, much to my utter disgust - and here's why. I walk around with my not-really-top-of-the-range-but-the-best-I-can-afford camera, and think, "Ooooh! Pretty!" and take a shot. Then I think, no, I...

    Canon or Nikon

Stop agonising over it! I wrote lists and researched reviews and prices for months and months, and my husband eventually just went out and bought me a Nikon "because lots of journalists seem to have black and yellow straps and they kinda look good". It's swings and roundabouts. Learn to...

Cheaper to buy body and lens separate?

I don't know the specific camera/lens combination yuo're looking at, but I bought the D90/18-105mm kit and really regretted it. I totally wish I'd saved a few quid by not getting the kit lens, and spent more on a decent zoom. The only saving grace of the whole transaction was that someone...

    Processing RAW images

I took pot luck at my local Public Library (remember them?!) and got a book called "After the shoot" which really helped me set up my workflow. It was for CS4 though - although I expect it's broadly similar?

    I have a new 50mm 1.8

I practised on things that didn't move around too much! That helped. And manual focus too. Take it out to some railings or a fence or a line of trees, and see where the autofocus takes you :) Vixen is right, btw - your children are very photogenic.
