What's your overall budget including lenses? The Canon 20d is a great camera for the price, but if you can stretch a little bit more I'd get the 30d, there aren't that many upgrades but the screen is much bigger and this does make a difference. I still have my 20d. I think Ffordes have the 20d...

It is a bit daft, but funds are tight at the moment and it's not my only camera. I don't want to just blow £150 (£200 inc postage) on fixing it without some idea of the length of service a new shutter might afford.

My mk1 Canon 5D's shutter has failed and I've had a reasonable quote of £150 to fix (not including P&P). My question is - will this prolong the life of the camera sufficiently to make the cost of repair worth it? The shutter count was only around 15,000.

I think this is the key point here. Why force yourself to use only one tool when it's more than reasonable to carry both zooms and primes? If you're able to capture creative compositions with a zoom lens, then there's just no need to use a prime to force thought about composition. Unless there...
