Welding Glass Conversions - Shade Number to F-Stop Reduction.

Not sure if this is the best place, but as I have taken lots of brilliant information from this forum, I thought I would add back to it. Attached below is a spreadsheet showing a conversion table between different grades of welding glass, and their relevent F-Stop Reduction. Also shows %...

If you aren't happy with the OSX software, you can always dual boot windows onto it. Windows 7 Runs really well!

    Desktop or Laptop?

From a non image point of view, Laptops, when using Lightroom and Photoshop, can struggle with overheating issues (especially if used on the lap, and not on the table). I would use a desktop every time. Get a big IPS screen. 27 iMac's are good, if a little pricey.

    Shooting the stars

Its very hard in the UK to get shots without noise pollution (or at least in my area, near London). You can however turn the noise pollution into a feature! A friend had good luck with being on the west coast of Ireland, pointing out to sea! Nothing for ages. However, a ship did once ruin his...

Signs it's going to be a good sunset?

Regarding colours, there is no guarantee of having a lovely sunset. generally, days without rain (which moves dust to ground level) tend to be better, as does light patchy cloud (gives some interest). Avoid fully overcast days, and days where it has been raining all day in the distance.

    ghost photography

My suggestion - buy the cheapest UV filter you can find. This will add interesting artifacts onto the image, claiming to be ghosts. From what I gather, the enjoyment of ghost hunting is the critical analysis of the images.

    How to check Sigma lenses?

If you continually have issues getting focus spot on in normal light conditions, then consider checking. Otherwise, just go take some photos!

    Thinking of buying this camera?

I would strongly suggest going for a second hand body, and saving the money for a future lens. Bodies deprecate in value fast. Lenses tend to hold their value well (in some cases, increase!)

Canon 18-55IS red and blue fringing: normal?

Regardless, it is easy to fix in post processing. Use Lightroom and turn on Develop on import. Set it to fix Chromatic Abberation, Lens Distortion, and I also set it to apply the 550D camera profile.

    first step on the ladder...

You may find shooting sport with the 55-250mm difficult, due to the relatively slow nature of the lens. Shooting sport outside in the bright day light will be fine, but low light / indoor sports will be challenging to get tack sharp images.

Carrying a DSLR and two lenses

It all depends on how often you change your lens, and when / why you do it. For example, if you use your 28-75 most of the time and use your 10-24mm only for Landscapes, using a tripod, the additional time taken to swap the lenses is no big deal. If you continually find yourself swapping...
