I'd definitely take the camera. You are very free to move about and you may get lucky with a nice spot. That said the stand is pretty good too!

A 300mm lens will likely be fine as long as you aren't stuck up in the main stands. My preferred spot is behind the garages on the sharp right hander (there's a small platform there but you're better off getting right up to the wire).
