As Paul has already covered Eizo and NEC are awesome but expensive - I'm currently using a Dell U2515h which is a really nice screen.
What's the model of the pc? How many times does it beep or is it constant? Normally they will beep in a pattern or sequence to distinguish between different errors
Did he previously have a green screen as you could try and identify it.
As Alastair said - might be easier to either get him vouchers or speak to him and find out what he wants.
Depending on which part of the track - 18-105 would be fine at Druids but would fall short at the rest of the track.
You would need something more around the 70-300 range but have a look through some of the previous threads here to see what others have used.

Most important question - what is your budget?
If your dad is willing to let you use his 450D it might be a good idea to have a play and see how you get on.
If you're going to be shooting the night sky you'll want to get a tripod as you'll be using slow shutter speeds :)

Thanks for the advice, the 60d are well within budget so that's a good option. Would you advise looking at any other lenses or should I stick with the Tamron? I'm guessing the 18-55 kit lens I have at the moment is pretty outdated.
