    Light Metering

    Do a google for Zone Metering. You'll find some charts for 5 different percentages of grey. Read up about the different shades and how exposure compensation can affect your exposure.

    Recommend a good book for beginners?

    Hi all - first post! I'd second Understanding Exposure, everything clicked after reading that. Another book i've found invaluable is Exposure by Chris Weston. Lots of great info about spot metering for 18% grey which has really made a great impact on my photos.
