    Beginner Issues with flash photos

The camera was on the intelligent auto mode, as it was being used by a number of different people, depending who was to be in the pictures. I can't find any setting to force the flash to fire, I thought that opening the flash would do that, as closing it clearly disables it? This has only...

    Beginner Issues with flash photos

Thanks, I think I have reasoned this out. It is a very fast lens and it seems it was deciding in automatic mode that the flash wasn't needed, even though I was sure it had flashed each time. When I have used the built in flash before it was with the much slower original kit lens which came with...

    Beginner Issues with flash photos

I am a little confused. I have taken loads of pictures with my GX7 panasonic, but not many with the built in flash as I usually have a 14-140 lens on it and this shadows the flash, hence I would normally use a clip on external metz flash.I haven't even used this much as normally photographing...

    Which DSLR for quietest shutter?

+1, and my panasonic GX7 also has a silent mode where it prevents the flash actuating, the camera making any beeps etc, and uses a silent electronic shutter. All this in a very discreet camera and relatively small camera, particularly if you use say the 20mm prime lens, so you can take photos in...

Beginner About to take it to the next level - which camera?

Looks to me that the main reason SLR's are still so popular are down to two things; 1 inertia and the need for some people spend a fortune to carry around a huge camera and lens as some sort of display. 2 Poor understanding of how live view works and how much more useful it is when implemented...

Beginner About to take it to the next level - which camera?

EVF's were poor in the past, I have an old Sony Bridge camera from my father, which takes superb pictures, despite being only 8mega pixel (the first 8meg sensor consumer camera). However it uses an EVF, or its rear lcd screen and the resolution on both is so poor that although you can...

Beginner About to take it to the next level - which camera?

The focus aid is extremely useful, it magnifies part of the image and it is much easier to see that it is focused. This is only used of course if you use the manual focus. The camera when on manual focus, even with vintage lens effectively highlights that part of the image which is in the...

Beginner About to take it to the next level - which camera?

Well that only matters on an SLR, as the MFT doesn't use a mirror and hence shows the actual picture to be taken, hence it of course is not dark. If it was dark it would mean the camera is unable to take the shot at all. The adapter on M42 lenses makes the aperture change immediately, unlike on...

Need a lens cap. Where from?

I have been buying new lens caps for my vintage lenses off e-bay. Pinch caps, admittedly for small sizes typically cost about 99p including delivery from China and they are well made! one for your size is rather more expensive but still a third of the price above...

    Beginner Where to start

I tried to get a good photo of the supermoon the other day, and must have taken over 100 shots trying to get the best picture. As digital pictures are effectively free once you own the camera, until you decide to print one, taking a lot of pictures with different settings seems to be the best...

Beginner About to take it to the next level - which camera?

I have gone down the MFT route and bought a GX7. I think it is great and now the live view eyepiece is so developed, I prefer that to a SLR viewfinder. I can see what the picture I take will look like, I can use vintage lenses stopped down and check that I have the focal range right, exposure...

    IF NEW - READ THIS

Hi, Ken form near Leeds UK, want to improve my skills now I have a good camera, quite like trying out vintage lens, etc as reminds me of the 1980's when I last had a good quality SLR with interchangeable lens, (an Oloympus OM10), however the cost of taking film pictures was so high it was not...

Snapper chased along beach by a mob of angry parents

You need to be careful. I took a picture in the lake district with a 300mm zoom on my Micro 4/3 camera, so a very long shot. When I looked on the computer at home there was a small child having his clothes changed at the bottom of the picture, that I never noticed when I composed the shot!
