If you're looking for a cheap-ish 70-300mm which WILL autofocus on your camera then I recommend taking a look at THIS from Sigma... It's a great lens in good light and has the added benefit of a "macro" setting (not full 1:1 though) for close-up shooting.
I took this with my one the other week...
If the D3000 has a built-in AF motor then this lens will work... If it doesn't then it will still work but you'll have to focus it manually which, believe me, is a real pain with long zooms. The price probably reflects the above... I think the built-in AF version is only about £150 so that price...
Hi - you haven't said what you use the camera for...FX has it's advantages in low-light situations and lots of wedding & sports pros use them because of that...but for wildlife you lose that 1.6 efffective extra magnification which a crop sensor body gives you (what I mean is a zoom lens will...

That's great news mate...hope it turns out to be the case...
As far as losing the stuff from the boot goes, I'd certainly pay £700 to get my other £10K back so you may just have to write that off.
I usually use 1/200 with the same camera and trigger but if I then change speed I also change the sync speed in the menu system - don't know if it makes any difference though.
