I usually just aim it at something I can see, such as a distant light or horizon, then focus on that. This will take it to infinity, then just switch it to manual focus and be careful not to knock it.

Sounds like your using the camera on Auto, which won't be able to cope with the conditions your shooting in. As said above, set it too bulb mode. Or if you don't have a remote shutter control, just put it in M mode and do a 5 second exposure at f/8 and keep trying until you capture one right...

When viewing a RAW file, you have to use software that has the correct colour profile set up, otherwise it does not know what colours the camera has recorded. By using your camera software, you should get a more accurate representation. I had this problem when I started using RAW, because...

Thanks. I use Paint.NET at the moment for editing my images. I'll just need to keep fiddling until I get a feel for how to adjust the photo to my liking.

How would you go about fixing that? I have also just started shooting in RAW, and find that most of my photos come out fine, yet they seem to have different brightness levels in different pieces of software. I know this is because each software uses its own colour profile when reading RAW...
