    Official Talk Leica thread

I’ve had the 35mm 1.7, sold because of the ergonomics and vignette, it’s really noticeable, by far the worst I’ve seen in a lens. Currently have the 35mm 2.4 summarit but don’t really get on with it, I find it too sharp with no real character, a very modern rendering. Regret selling an old 35mm...

Quick check before hitting buy, camera for photos of an active toddler?

Thank you for the advice all, I’ve decided to start with the A7 III and 35mm 1.2, agree this might be a large setup but should be ok. Had a look at a few threads with images from the Sigma and another with images from the Sony 1.4 GM, preferred the look of the Sigma so went with that. I have the...

Quick check before hitting buy, camera for photos of an active toddler?

Interesting suggestion on the A7C, I hadn't considered that, reading the first review page on dpreview vs A7 III seems to have better autofocus (in terms of the Sony AI). It would change my lens choice as well, drawn to the Sigma lenses for the rendering, but wouldn't balance on the A7C. I'll do...

Quick check before hitting buy, camera for photos of an active toddler?

I've been doing a little research on the next purchase, the primary use of the system will be family photos, a lot of which will be young toddlers. The existing cameras I have are manual focus rangefinders (M9) or good quality compacts (RX1R, X70). I can get good family photos with these but not...

Newborn on the way, looking for a complementary camera

Good point, perhaps I'm just getting a bit of GAS and using it as an excuse :). I do prefer 40mm, quite close to 35mm frame-lines. I used the 35mm 1.4 on an X-Pro1, so just assumed the AF was a bit slow due to that body, good to know it's a little slow on the X-T2. Potentially that's throwing...

Newborn on the way, looking for a complementary camera

Thanks for the feedback both, I've had the RX1R before and no doubt it's a great camera. The part I struggled with the rear screen in sunlight, I did have the external EVF but for some reason I couldn't get a clear view - sounds weird but my eyelashes kept getting in the way. I found it worked...

Newborn on the way, looking for a complementary camera

We have our firstborn on the way and I'm considering what system to buy into to document the next few years. I've owned nearly every system (except Cannon) over the years, but still can't decide! About 1-2 years ago I consolidated to my Lecia M9, 28mm 2.8, 35mm f2.4, & 50mm f2 (alongside 2...

Please talk me out of an Xpan

Had an XPan for a while, only regret is selling before the price rocketed, not that I sold it. For me film is such a PITA that even tho I still own some decent film cameras I rarely shoot + have loads of expired film / undeveloped rolls. Nearly bought an M7 at the weekend but talked myself out...

Backpacking Asia + Aus- take a tripod?

Feel I’m somewhat qualified to answer (having spent 2 years travelling SE Asia snapping pictures). My advice is to go with a high quality joby gorilla pod &, depending on your camera, a triple hot-shoe bubble level. I’d also highly recommend a go-pro (doesn’t need to be the latest model) & WiFi...

    Beginner Street Shooting Styles

I find shots at over 35mm to be more voyeristic for the viewer, I’m not saying EVERY shot at over 35mm on the street falls into that category, but I find < 35mm to be more engaging. To make a decent shot at <28mm you either have to ask permission or be bold, both of which reflect to the viewer.

    Beginner Street Shooting Styles

Personally I find street photographs @> 35mm to be creepy, 21, 24, 28, and 35 are the best (MAYBE 40mm on occasion). I meter for the highlights, then for shadows, and pick one depending on the conditions. Lens stopped down to f11 @ 1.5m and shutter round 500. Lift, click, done.

What are you using as more compact/second camera

X70 + WCL-X70 (when I want it). Ricoh GR gets an outing fairly regularly. Fave combo is the X70 + WCL & X100T with TCL, carry them both, nice lightweight wide+tele setup.
