    zone system - a primer

The Zone System as used by Ansel Adams starts in the photographers mind when he or she visualises the finished result. It continues through exposure, individual development of the negative, exposure and individual development and finishing of the print. Direct quote from The Print, chapter 3...

    zone system - a primer

i made a living from LF for about 40 years. Mostly 5x4 with some 10x8 and occasional 14x12 depending on the needs of the job. I used the Zone System all the time and find the books I listed as far and away the best for a simple explanation of the method. This not in any way a criticism of...

    zone system - a primer

It is important to realise that the Zone System covers not only exposure but individual development of each negative. Developer concentration and/or time may need to be varied to achieve the desired result. You then have to do the same thing with the printing stage. Ansel Adams worked out...

Got quizzed for taking pictures at the airport...5 publications!!

No you don't. Being polite and co-operative will do just as well and is likely to be quicker. The last set of figures I saw showed that theft from retail premises amounts to the equivalent of £50 per family per year. Given that the vast majority of families don't steal, that leaves a small...

Got quizzed for taking pictures at the airport...5 publications!!

Terrorists only have to get lucky once, the anti terrorist authorities have to get lucky all the time. Its people like that dispatcher that keep airports safe for the rest of us to use.

    What does the law say?

The Data Protection Act permits information which under most circumstances would be considered confidential, to be obtained and used in the preparation of either defence or prosecution in matters of law. I can't see that he did anything wrong, in fact he did what everybody should do and made an...

    Today i bought a ...

Although the rangefinder cam was profiled for an individual lens they will often give acceptable focus with a lens of the same focal length, especially when using small apertures. I used to make my own cams and file them to give correct focus. Long winded the first time but it gets easier with...

Using an OM lens on a 4/3 Camera

I posted the way i did to avoid confusing the OP. Having seen his later post with explanation of why he wanted that particular lens it was clearly unnecessary. it works well without being too large to lug about.

Using an OM lens on a 4/3 Camera

Didn't mean to cause offence. Without the full explanation it made me wonder of you had fallen for some dubious advertising. I wish you luck with getting to grips with the basics, you will get a lot more out of your photography that way.

Am I destined to become a collector?

I worked as a pro for many years and every single day I took my "work in any weather never need a battery focus in low light almost silent" back up camera with me. otherwise known as a Leica M3. It never let me down and no matter how bad the conditions I always felt confident when using it.

Using an OM lens on a 4/3 Camera

Which is why I posted this knowing he was using a 4/3 body and is (judging form his post) fairly new to this sort of thing.

Using an OM lens on a 4/3 Camera

I use a 300mm f4.5 OM on my e410, other than manual focussing it works very well. Make sure you get a genuine olympus MF-1 adaptor, I know 2 people who have damaged camera bodies with cheapo copies. Seems a bit odd to be using an OM 28mm lens as thats equivalent to 56mm digital. I don't know...

    Personal Safety

The confusion comes because a lot of so called defence sprays are actually marker sprays. carrying a personal alarm is an excellent idea but make sure its a good one and keep it where you can ALWAYS get at it at once - even with gloves on. They are no good at all if kept in the bottom of a...
