Keep the dslr and add a compact. All of these different kinds of cameras have special uses. I carry a 5d2, an xsi and a compact as well. I would miss any of the three if gone. I'm not a pro, just a motivated amateur.. I wouldn't get rid of your dslr just yet. is it possible to add a compact?

Id look into gps beacons. They make clip on types, and some a fairly small. Also, there are now what thru call E-shoes. They are a gps and ipod. I know there's a tool to fit your application. Mountaineering places have a selection if these devices. Good luck!

I imagine it to be minerals or whatever might be in a liquid that got on and then dried. You see them and they look like you describe. Some are 'harder' than others and thus come off easier. ....breathing a huff of condensed exhale breath adds a touch of moisture that may indeed help your lens...

And maybe it matters if you can do the push/pull focus if the 100-400 rather than just the twist if the 70-200.
