I bought a Benro GH-2 a few years ago. It's well built and does the job well.
Here's an example for sale.

I picked up a Coolpix A for £325 a few months ago and have been very pleased with it. If you can live with the 28mm focal length then do consider it, especially if you are used to Nikon menus. Image quality is very good, and it does fit in jeans pockets. Not quite as well as a Sony RX100 does...
I'll be interested to hear suggestions as I want one too, for much the same uses. Something that comes close to Apple Retina quality but for pc would be good.
Best value for money presumably is the Mark 1 now. I have had both Mark 1 and Mark 2. I didn't notice much difference in picture quality, but the tilting screen is a nice feature on the Mark 2. I gave the Mark 1 to my son, and sold the Mark 2. I now use a Nikon Coolpix A as a pocket camera...
I had a Nikkor 18-200mm and didn't get on with it at all. The zoom control was less than tight and quite sloppy (something I believe Nikon improved upon with the mark II version) but worst of all, image quality was very disappointing. I was much happier when I moved to a Nikkor 16-85mm VR...
I agree with those suggesting a D300. It's an extremely capable camera with an AF system that's as good as it gets (still) as far as DX Nikon offerings go.
If you look around carefully you should find one at or very near to your budget.
