Best lens for shooting the 'Aurora borealis' Northern Lights

You've already been given some good advice re lenses (I used a 10-24mm up in Finland), but I can give you some practical tips. I presume you'll be going in the winter? - A solid, sturdy tripod (without this even the best lens is a non-starter since you'll be either in bulb mode or taking long...

    Buying a lens abroad

Thanks jojo90 and OldCarlos. Will keep it off the body till I'm back in blighty. :) I'll keep that in mind. If my calculations are correct, I'll owe HM government slightly under £11.

Equipment for Safari - huge change up/additions needed

I personally think an 85mm prime would be two restrictive and you're better off with two zooms spanning a greater range. I don't have a 100-400mm, but would have definitely carried it over the 70-300mm if I did. Like you, I did consider renting one and specifically looked at LensesForHire...

    Buying a lens abroad

I'd get it delivered to a hotel. I did the same thing a couple of years ago in the US, ordered some accessories from B&H. Normally I'd just do this but the huge differential in price has given me some pause. Though Amazon are usually a great retailer to deal with, so just a bit unsure.

Equipment for Safari - huge change up/additions needed

I just got back from a long trip to Zambia and I'd suggest investing in a couple of long lenses and dispensing with the body upgrade together. Will you be doing a lot of night safaris? The morning tours usually start at 6am, and the light's already pretty good. You may spot a porcupine or a...

    Buying a lens abroad

Hi all, There's a small chance I may be in India later this month, and it so happens that Amazon India are selling the Nikon 24-120mm f/4 version for approximately £420. The same lens is listed on Amazon UK for £730. Given the substantial difference in cost, the fact that the order is Amazon...

    Is this actually true?

This is from a Bloomberg article this morning: "Basic digital cameras have gotten really, really good over the past few years. That tiny shooter sitting in your smartphone is leaps and bounds better than the highest-end digital cameras from just five years ago." Is this true, or a bit of...

    Aurora photography questions

Hi all, I'm trying to capture some northern lights with a D90, 10-24mm and a sturdy tripod. I just wanted a couple of tips / suggestions on the following settings: 1. Should I set Long Exposure NR to On? Or shall I leave it Off? 2. Should I be using the RGB histogram? 3. What White Balance...

    Tips/suggestions for aurora photography

Hello, I find shooting the snow a bit tricky generally, so would appreciate any tips suggestions for both snow/ice and the aurora. I'm planning to use a Nikon D90 with a 10-24mm cranked up to either 800, or if necessary, 1600 ISO. Any suggestions about speeds/f-stops/exposure settings would be...

    Northern Lights trip coming up

No, at a place called Nellim. I was thinking of upto 20 sec exposure if I'm at 10-12mm?

    Northern Lights trip coming up

Hi all, I'm off on a short trip to Lapland next week, and will hopefully get to see (and photograph) some light displays. I find shooting the snow a bit tricky generally, so would appreciate any tips suggestions for both snow/ice and the aurora. I'm planning to use a Nikon D90 with a 10-24mm...

    The infatuation with 'sharpness'

Excellent point. My understanding is that focus area refers to the area of the image that's sharp, and that both an expensive lens and an inexpensive lens will result in the same focus, but not necessarily the same sharpness. So what exactly is the difference (I suppose that by definition a...

    Tripod head suggestions

Hi, Thanks for the great suggestions. I'm not leaning towards the 496RC2 to be honest, both based on both Tijuana's comments that the mount might be a bit small, and a review I read comparing the 494 to the 496. I'm not to worried about the load handling, more the ergonomics, so don't mind...
