Yep, thinking about driving up to Kingsbarns beach, or Balcomie tonight. The light pollution at both should be quite low. May also try the west sands at st Andrews but as far away from the town as possible! Good luck anyway Keith/Marie
Update: couple of weeks ago I had a hands on look at the vaio s12 in store which comes with the vaio display premium (not the bog standard 'vaio display' that featured in the m12 I linked to in the first post.
Was really impressed with the premium screen, and decided to go ahead with the...
I've got this page bookmarked - although it's primarily about doing a clean install there's a section near the bottom that lists the preinstalled vaio gumf with a high level description

Yeah had a look in the Glasgow store today and they didn't have the 15" Hi-Res Glossy display available in the store. However they did have the Hi-Res Antiglare which looked pretty decent, although not as vibrant as its 15 and 17" glossy counterparts
Couple more trips to the shops required I...
Whoops sorry about that :)
Well, had a look in store today and took a disc of contrasty images shot at recent wedding plus a bunch of landscapes. The vaio display is actually not bad, image quality is quite nice, just very slightly flat in contrast and I noted a little backlight bleed...
Ok folks cheers for the feedback, I'd consider a MacBook pro if I like the screen (or any other high res alternatives as mentioned in the 1st post) so I welcome any input in this respect.
I think I'll burn a disc of images and have a look in-store, the mrs wants to go shopping tomorrow anyway...
Guys thanks for the replies, food for thought. The MacBook pro is really tempting but i'm just slightly hesitant due to the jump in price (the debate of which I'm sure has already been done to death in other threads) - just specced a 15" i5 high res glossy for £1769 (although I guess the refurb...
I'm currently torn between purchasing a Sony F12 laptop or going for a Dell Studio XPS 16. Projected usage will likely be mostly surfing and image editing with an occasional gaming session thrown in for good measure..
I'm just looking for a good screen, the Sony one I'm interested in has a...
Hmmm I much prefer Skye in the winter so at this time of year I'd probably suggest getting down to Elgol at sunset (the sun will set behind the Cuillin Hills so you'll get a really stunning silhouette once the sun has gone down if it's not cloudy), or drive up to Neist Point a couple of hours...
No I don't think so, as I was shooting with a 40D at the time using the 300 + 1.4xTC combo
One other thing, when I went the hide was rammed with kids and parents, so there was quite a bit of noise - I don't think that helped our chances of seeing any otters!
Hi there,
I visited the hide out of curiosity a couple of years ago with a 300mm + 1.4TC. Unfortunately that was nowhere near long enough to frame any birds on the shoreline
I'm not a wildlife tog and don't really have any interest in it so I cannot say if the location is worth a visit or not
Go for the Canon 100mm f/2.8 USM macro :)
For jewellery it's a good focal length, I found that with shorter focal lengths (e.g. 50mm) if I was photographing a shiny item then the reflection of the camera and lens could be problematic.
If it's any peace of mind you could buy a 5d & 24-105 + 100-400 retail kit as well as (iirc) a 5d & 24-70 + 580EX kit a while back so the story in the OP may be perfectly feasable..
