My point was that the BBC one shows the same angle with the same field of view but it does not have the movement which the Guardian one has.
The BBC one was with a faster shutter speed so the blur is not there.
Yes the camera may have metered for the nest so what we are suggesting is how to override that automatic setting as it isn't working in this case due to the bright white wall?
Try taking some pics of just the wall, I assume the bird (a swallow?) wouldn't make that much of a difference to the exposure.. Once you have the exposure right then ur ready to take the pic when the bird returns...

Sounds like you're happy with what you have but are wanting to progress and get better results which you will only get with the better glass... So I say go for it!
But be careful with your DOF. With the 1.4 the DOF will reduce and potentially less of the photo will be in focus
The lens should have a switch on it to turn the IS on and off. If that isnt there then it is definitely not the IS version.
If you are not happy with it then take it back to Currys. Take print outs of the webpages with you. If they are not happy to exchange it for an IS lens then you should...
