How do variable ND filters actually work? It seems like witchcraft.... Or is it made up of 2 x straight polarising filters?

Does anyone know any good tips or guides for getting good composition? I find I have no problems getting well focused and exposed shots, but my composition is somewhat lacking... Can composition even be taught? Or is it one of those things that comes with experience? Thanks. :)

Setting a custom Wb on the D50 is easy. All you need to do is take a photo of a White or grey card with your filter in place, then go into the menu and select custom Wb from photo. Then choose your photo from the thumbnail and you're done. :)

I find setting a 2 second timer on the shutter release can reduce camera shake a little when doing long exposure handheld shots.. :)

Hmm, you may be able to power a normal wifi router from batteries, many of them run from 12v DC...

But surely then you'd have to have every manual for every camera? :p :D

I've now got a photo of nothing but well lit grass taken with the filter on which I can choose as a WB photo. I know what you mean about focusing, it can be a bit of a pain. I have find the autofocus sometimes works with the filter on, but you need to have quite a lot of light on the subject...

Ok, I forgot to ask this before, when doing a white balance shot of the grass, does this need to be done with the IR filter on or off? Thanks. :)

I should have said, I'd be using it for Macro shots, would this mean I'd need less light output? I guess there's something to be said for continuous light, in the past I've tried using LED torches to light macro shots but I think a DIY ringflash would give better results. :) I think a ring...

Something like Picasa or Faststone image viewer should be able to view RAW files. :)
