How can anyone afford this hobby?

OK…maybe I'm a bit over excited, but c'mon, how can anyone afford to keep up with technology…and don't tell me that you can "stop out" whenever you wish. I bought my computer and software package (Photoshop) about 5 years ago, and not too long after, a very nice camera and multiple lenses...

    Replacing stolen Nikon camera!

I have a D4; I've not used the other models you mention. Some real pluses with the D4--in no particular order: great low light ability; high frame rate; superior build quality; excellent fast focus; deep buffer; excellent dynamic range; great ergonomics (though that's a more personal...

What is your best photo you have taken in 2013 and why?

This is my current favorite from 2013…but six months from now I'll probably have a different opinion, LOL. Alley Bench Prints 1 by hunter20ga, on Flickr

    Nikon D4 Owner Thread

I love my D4. It is incredibly fast focusing and provides stunning high ISO photos. On top of that it delivers 10 fps...which is great for sports but also great for candid photos of politicians and other celebrities. It also has great dynamic range plus more than enough resolution for...

    Why throw away the Box!!

Since I do sometimes sell things on, I keep receipts (to prove I'm the rightful owner) and I keep boxes and all packing materials. I've sold several lenses and a camera this year...and potential buyers love opening the box and unpackaging the item. They always comment on how well kept the item...

Is the D4 worth a punt?

Everyone is different, so take this recommendation in that light. I bought a D4 last fall, and have never, ever, felt as though I'd made a mistake. It's a beautiful camera. Hugely capable... The price tag is staggering, too. It was, however, the right choice for me. No regrets.

    Overseas travel( Flights)

Bubble wrap is easy to come by and could be wrapped around a small tripod in your cargo hold luggage.

Fortunately, most thieves completely undervalue tripods and heads, so there's less likelihood of either being stolen from your luggage, I suppose.

Why I have four Lowepro bags.

I have four Lowepro bags; the oldest is a Stealth Reporter D300 AW. The others include a Fastpack 350, an Urban Photo Sling 250, and a Pro Messenger 160 AW. Each serves a different purpose. I have found them all to be of excellent quality, design and construction. The Stealth Reporter D300...

    Camera sling straps?

I certainly like my Black Rapid, and wouldn't trade it back for the old style strap. A D4 and 70-200 can start to weigh you down after awhile. LOL No piece of equipment ever invented is 100% perfect...everything has some drawbacks. Not using a strap means you're always holding your camera...

    Landscape Lens

Having used the 17-55 2.8G lens for several years on my D300 I never found fault with it. I certainly wouldn't trade it for an f4 lens with essentially the same wide end and shorter long end. In what way is the 17-55 letting you down?

    Another 'What Lens' Thread

I'm no expert in Canon lenses, so have no thoughts on quality, etc. I did move from crop to full frame this past fall, in the Nikon line-up. I, too, shoot a lot of landscape and night photography. I found that for both/either you really need the wide end for many shots. I wasn't satisfied at...

    D700

I seldom weigh in on these camera debates, but seriously, if you can get a D700 in good shape for a fair price, go for it. They are excellent performers, and 12x18's are easily achieved and larger, too. A very good friend of mine shoots a D700 and has amazing results. You don't have to...

    Nikon remote release stupidity

I've got a radio controlled release that works well...unless there's a barrier in place, such as a glass window. My thought was to set up the camera on a tripod near the bird feeder and watch from inside the house for possible shots. Unfortunately, the radio signal is not strong enough to work...

    Moving to full frame.

I recently moved to full frame in the Nikon line and love my new camera, but really cannot say that FF was the key motivating factor for the switch. I wanted features that the new model offered, and Nikon didn't provide them in a DX frame. I spent years accumulating top notch glass in...
