It never comes up in my mind to convert our garage into a studio. It's my brother's room actually was my first option since it has higher ceilings and much wider space compared to mine.
In my case, I always bring my camera since I am a professional still life photographer. When I was a student, I also bring mine as well since it is recommended in photography course.
I think this is the matter of skills and how long your patience will be. Even though post editing is fine, the ideal thing to do is get the right photos by means of your camera.
I have been using 7D in capturing wildlife pictures lately and I got contended by the result. I also try capturing landscapes using the same camera, and it satisfies me as well.
