    help needed

If he does that, he'll end up with shapeless green smears across the sky. To capture that classic "curtain" formation of the Northern Lights, you need a reasonably high shutter speed.

What lessons have you learn from your last set of photos

That even when I'm carrying my "essentials" (ie: Camera, flash, possibly a second lens), I should take a flash diffuser with me. Nikon even provided me with one specifically for that flash, so it's not like I have to ferret around in my box of Stofens and white socks and all the other ones I've...

Anyone shoot sony? Love minolta lenses

I paid £4 for mine, intending to use it as a prop more than anything. I stuck a role of film through it out of curiosity and it's now my main film camera.

Anyone shoot sony? Love minolta lenses

I love the Minolta lenses too, especially the primes. I don't shoot Sony though.

    Photos in your home

I haven't at present, but (touch wood) should be moving to a bigger and better place before the end of this year, so the gloves will be off.

    So frustrating

I had a guy where I used to work claim that a Nikon D200 had a second diaphragm inside the body. This would allow him to connect it to a telescope that was fixed at f8, and then open it up further. The supposed reason I couldn't comprehend how or why this could be, was because I only had a...

I wouldn't normally have a pop at Ken Rockwell...

I'd put as much faith in that article as I would in what Ken says. The "quirky sense of humour or liar" shows that whoever wrote this has an axe to grind. Maybe it's because Ken's sense of humour is more in line with the British than the Americans, but his detractors don't seem to pick up on...

Would you like to use your old film SLR as digital?

This is the bit that I was going to point out. I would love to be able to digitise my XA2 or my Trip35 (and my le clic disc cameras), but not only would the sensor need to match the full frame design, it also needs to be where the film plane is or it just won't be in focus. While it...

Whats the best way to take a photo of lightning?

Tripod and long exposure. Using a tripod means you can always use parts of a non-lightning shot for the surroundings if need be.

    Noise on kit lens

Barratt thinks you require some nd filters. These would darken the sky and thus you wouldn't be boosting the shadows which causes a lot of noise in the lower end cameras.

    Your photography pet hates

I think it's a just a phase everyone goes through. They get a camera with the ability to do long exposures and the most obvious test subject is some form of light trail.

    Who needs Photoshop?

I'm assuming the zeppelin one is a publicity photo? It's not some crazy creative thing though, as the Empire State Building did have a zeppelin dock on the top.

    Old Canon FD Lens

With the exception of those made for the T80 (and the massive precursor that looked like a laser guided missile launcher), FD lenses are manual focus. Like anything on eBay, so long as there aren't a lot of other people who really want one that week, FD lenses can be a bargain. There's also...

When is it illegal to photograph something and then sell it ?

I'm with Banksy on this one. Did Hirst consult with the traders whether or not they wanted his statue impacting their business?
