    Action shots

The important thing to bear in mind is that when you buy your first DSLR you are not buying the camera, you're buying into a whole system. So if you choose canon and subsequently add some lenses then it becomes expensive if you subsequently want to swap to Nikon/Sony and so on. With that in...

    Best lens for a safari

I've taken both lenses Sigma 120-400 and Canon 100-400 on safari in the past. The 100-400 is the better of the two, you would expect no less as it costs 2x as much! It is sharper at all apertures, has (sllightly) faster autofocus and is lighter. On the downside it is a push pull lens, which...

    zoom lenses sigma 120-400,150-500,canon 100-400

I used the 120-400 extensively (two years of weekly Motorsport uses, a couple of trips to Africa and general all round long reach tom-foolery) before I upgraded to a second hand 100-400L (which I have been using in a similar capacity for a similar length of time). The Sigma is a great lens (I'm...

Please recommend a Lens for me :)

I recently dug out the EF-S 17-85 f4-5.6 (I think!!). It's the the old 50D "Kit" lens. While not without faults, it's not a bad all round performer and can be had used for around 200 english pounds.

    Once In A Lifetime

I took a trip to the Gorillas in Rwanda in 2011, coupled with Safari in the Masai Mara and Nakuru and some adventure stuff in Uganda. I took the following: 50D - Mostly wearing a 100-400L 5D - Mostly wearing a 24-104 F4L In addition I had a nifty 50 and aside from dull things like filters...

    Questions on shooting Superbikes

To maintain a sense of movement you need to keep your shutter speed at the lower end of the range (although the exact setting will depend on where and how fast they are moving). I view the "safe" range for panning shots ie maximum number of keepers to be in 1/160 - 1/250, ISO 200-400, aperture...

VEE FESTIVAL AND VICTOR MELDREW TROPHY

Formula Vee are single seaters - based on VW Beetle motors other bits, drivers are not required to be raving mad, but it is considered to be an advantage. Victor Mildrew is for drivers of a certain age and disposition - IIRC quite a mix of saloon cars on the grid.

    Motorsport gear survey

50D - Main 30D - Spare Canon 100-400 F4-5.6L Canon 70-200 F4L (used a lot less since the 100-400 replaced the 120-400) Canon 24-105 f4L (not often used but sometimes comes along) Bodies may change next year.....but that's very fluid right now

    Confused Buyer! Lencarta or Bowens

    - Which model do you have? I have a pair of elite Pro 300 - never missed a beat. - Have you had any issues? - the only one I had was with a jammed background stand, which I fixed with a combination of technical skill and violence - How was the aftersales support ? - Good - Gary even answered...

So I shot my first wedding.....

    6) I was at a loose end while the register was being signed officially, so I looked toward the family. I liked the reactions in this one, if not the most technical shot 7) Standard Register shot 8) This is an experimental processing treatment - the couple have the full colour one...

So I shot my first wedding.....

Okay - just had time to do this before the f1 started. Here are a small selection from throughout the day - I selected these ones initially randomly, from my personal favourites. I've not selected those which I feel are more personal to the couple (the complication of shooting a family...

    Best lens for motorsport

The "right" lens for motorsport depends on where and what you are shooting. If it's rallying in the deepest darkest of forests an f2.8 will have a distinct advantage. If however you are shooting on a track, then most of the time an f/4 or even 5.6 will be fine 99% of the time. As for...

    METEOR SHOWER!!

I have a 30d hanging off the back of a skywatcher evostar 120 telescope - it's firing off around 50 x 20 second exposures that I'll then stack using a program called deeps sky stacker to create the final image. It is an unguided exposure, so I have to limit my exposures a bit. Of course...
