After 5 years finally replaced my A9. Lots of options with A7V, A7RV, used A1, adapted Nikon Z8.
Nikon was just too big/heavy, would miss a usable electronic shutter with the A7RV, and was close between the A7V and A1. The additional megapixels (for my beloved 70-350), faster electronic...
I similarly had a capture clip fail and their support was excellent with a replacement shipped next day.
Their shops are also great if you’re ever in Ny/LA/Prague/Tokyo.
Depends on the intensity. Saw them in Tromso a few years ago and was unbelievably vivid with the bare eye. In more southern locations and/or weaker solar activity it’s more post processing.
I would consider it a bonus rather than the focus of the trip and then you can’t leave disappointed...
For those posting Mac specs can you include how long applying Lightroom denoise takes. On my base spec M2 Pro setup rendering and export times are more than fast enough but 25-35 seconds per image to apply denoise soon adds up for batch processing.
For that budget a used DSLR will have better AF than any older mirrorless cameras. Take a look at MPB, something like a Canon 60D or Nikon D7000 will set you back under £200, add a 70-300mm lens for another £200.
I have both a Linux Mint PC and a Mac. DarkTable (Lightroom) + GIMP (Photoshop) are the main editing software although there are some others (RawTherapee). However Lightroom is far more user friendly, has far more organisational features and I'm far too invested in my workflow.
If you don't...
True - Sony's complete abandonment of an updated entry level APS-C model makes no sense to me. Just stick USB-C and the latest software on a parts-bin update to the A6100 and it'll sell great.
Just sold my A6400 as I took less than 50 pictures with it last year. Bought in 2019 for $800, sold for $680 in 2026 (with a couple of accessories admittedly. I'm shocked at how little depreciation that is (thanks Sony I guess for not launching better APS-C cameras?).
Very happy with my Peak Design Slide when out and about with my 200-600 or 24-70. However when using smaller lenses it’s too big which is the beauty of the Peak Design system and easy to switch out for a lighter weight strap. If you have a strap you currently like the Anchor Links are excellent...
I did have the 40mm f2.5 for a while but sold it. I know it's only 2/3 stop but found myself wanting for a little more light and slightly shallower DOF.
That said it was the lens (+A9) that I took to the hospital for when my daughter was born so I guess that's praise...
