    What Colour Background

    Hi Pete, If you have enough lights then you can use your black (assuming you get one) as a grey - you just have to light it.... the benefit of this is that you can have a grey background without shadows if you light it at around the same power the light that reaches it from your subject lights...

    Is it me or my camera/flash causing the problem?

    Hi Matt, It seems like when you are using the wide angle the camera is metering the whole scene and therefore correctly exposing the background. Try using spot metering on your son's face instead - you might have to use the flash lock function to lock in the meter reading before re-composing...

    Brooks school of photography is very good - he's in Bournemouth and tries to give an insight in to the whole business including marketing etc...

    Low aperture on ultrawides

    The main times I use my 10-20mm with a wide aperture is for interiors - wide angle to get the whole room in and wide aperture for low light conditions (old buildings, churches, temples, ruins etc...)
