sometimes it's difficult to get a larger group all looking the right way for every shot as they want to look at their friends. But there is no way I would ban it, ask them to hold off for a second, whilst you get your shot.....chances are you're going to get a better shot that the friend anyway.

clothing will really help, a top and long jacket works very well, plus the other tips too.

I can get a sharp shot at 1/50th, but you have a few variables here, how steady where you as the lens is to heavy not to have good technique, even with IS, even tougher if it wasn't on.....what was the subject doing? moving, any movement going to show up.

they look slightly underexposed, but they're not in focus, you're focusing on the back wall by the looks of it...what focus mode/points are you using?

I've got the Lee ones and I didn't find them too small for my 550 or 580 flashes.
