I wouldnt rule out the flash if you dial in your setting right with the light that is available some cracking shots can be had without losing any of the atmosphere.......attatched some images of the last gig I shot where flash was used throughout the whole set

tried this myself for the first time the other night, I'm a Mac owner with cs5 but struggled to find anything to stack the shots....ended up going to my mates house to process the shot there. Here's my effort 77 shots at 20s exposure. Would have done more but X-factor was coming on lol

Ok so i had a little play around with tinfoil and stuff and came up with this.....is the tinfoil a distraction?, because I kinda like the texture behind him.
