    Beginner Controversial upgrade?

Might be worth checking the focus on your D90 - I used one until recently when I realised that it was focusing somewhere behind where I wanted it to. That can have the effect of making your images look soft.

North England Hull. Is it worth bothering with?

I live in Hull, I love it, but as a destination for photography that's not street or people... I'm not sure. It's very flat, got bombed to poop during the war and doesn't have many super fancy buildings like you might find in Leeds or Manchester so it's not necessarily hugely obviously...

    Panasonic GX80

I have one and I love it, my Nikon DSLR kit barely gets a look in now. Use it with Nikon lenses (MF) fine, but the one I use the most is a battered old Helios F2.

    Picture Control setting in EXIF

    Sounds like I wasn't wrong ;)

    Picture Control setting in EXIF

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure if you're shooting in Raw the picture controls won't have any effect. I could be wrong though.

    Handheld telephoto.

A handy rule of thumb is that to handhold a given focal length you'll need an equivalent shutter speed - so at 70mm you'll get away with 1/70th of a second, 200mm = 1/200th, 300mm = 1/300 and so on. Also be careful how you hold your camera. If you're stood up, you want one hand on the body...

How do I watch my tablet through my Smart(?) TV?

I've always held that smart TVs are a) not and b) pretty useless. My guess is the reason it's not working is that the USB port is designed to read data from a drive; that's not what your tablet is doing at the moment, it's streaming video via an app. If you don't mind spending an extra few...

    What's happened to my camera?

I have a Nikon D90. It's old, and has led a fairly hard life, but I've not really used it for a couple of years as I'm mostly mirrorless now. Got it out for a play the other day, and the autofocus was off (shooting portraits focused on the eye at f4 the ear was perfectly sharp, the eye was...

    Tripod for m4/3 landscapes

I picked up a Redged 522 with ball head (link below) to replace an ageing and heavy Slik tripod that basically disintegrated. The Redged is a LOT lighter but pretty decently stable, especially if you hang something off the wee hook in the middle. I wouldn't recommend anything super cheap (I've...

    Beginner Nikon D3300 opinions

The D3300 will be great, as will any entry level SLR nowadays - it's hard to find a bad one to be honest. I'd ask yourself what your plans are though - if you want to build a system (various lenses, flashes, etc) then it'll be a great starting point, but if you just plan on using it as is then...

Photographing training excercises, and climbing a mountain

Protection - depends on your camera, higher end DSLRs tend to be pretty well sealed. I tend to go with a good case that's at least showerproof and try to stop the camera getting too wet. ISO - as low as you can. Speed - fast enough to freeze the people you're shooting. White balance - auto...

Micro 4/3rds lens for night sky photography?

No idea, I'm new to M43 but I'm off up to Kielder this weekend so I'll probably have a bash. I'll let you know how it goes (kit lens but also a bunch of Nikon lenses with an adapter).

    Advice needed please

If you want a face to face chat about it then drop me a line, I used to shoot weddings pro (still do the odd one now and then) and I live in Hull.

    Navigational aids in the woods

I'm another fan of Viewranger on the phone (but like most I use it in conjunction with an actual map and compass). I find that maps alone can be a bit tricky in the woods, especially if you're wandering away from the paths - there can be too little information to easily work out where you are...

    M4/3 Lenses for video advice?

I'm looking at investing in a little M4/3 system as a bit of a "do it all" solution sitting between my ageing Canon S95 which goes everywhere and my also ageing Nikon D90 plus lenses which hardly goes anywhere (but does get used heavily sporadically, if that makes sense). Prime usage will be...
