I use a Nikon 300mm AFS 2 f2.8 with a range of convertors, for me, you have to be able to carry your kit to the site. Mobility is the thing for me. Then get as close as you can to the subject. I've had a monster lens and it was a pain - you can guess where . . .

for a walkabout/ street lens, i use 24mm ai-s manual lens. it's a wonder of lens construction.

I have the afs 2 version chosen for it's weight. The af issue never came up when I was searching out my buy. I used with a D200 too, but the lens really shone once a D3 was hooked up. They are super lenses, one day the camera upgrade will no doubt follow, when it does, you are ready!
