Sounds like this is full now but if there's a reserve list can I put myself down? (Richard)

    Shooting in the rain

I'm a beginner and so was caught unawares when the clouds ominiously appeared at my running club's fell race (not relevant to motorsport but the experience in this thread struck a chord) - I'd offered to do some pictures for the in house magazine. Being a newbie, I'd thought of everything except...

    Don McCullin film preview

More like a business decision pushed through by Andrew Neil to bring in more advertising revenue. It's easy to criticise Murdoch, but the Sunday Times was bleeding cash at the time...at least it still exists. It may be a shadow of its former self, but it still stands up as a campaigning paper...

    Lightroom 5 released

I'll be trying this on Wednesday, will download from CC. Any improvement on performance at all?

I'm using Aperture, should I change to Lightroom?

    > I am not bothered about the cost of the change, thanks to piratebay, however I don't > want to waste time learning to use it, only to find that it's a complete waste of my time. Yeah, we'll sit here giving you free advice on software we've paid for, to save you the tedious effort of...

    Focusing D5100

I think you want AF-S mode (single point autofocus). the AF-A mode switches automatically from single point to continuous (AF-C ie tracking moving objects). I don't trust the auto shift. set to AF-S and choose a focus point (you use the arrow keys to choose the points). If you're like me, you...

    Off-camera flash for portraiture

Phil's advice spot on as usual! Good luck Ged, I'm starting with the same kit. I'm going to be getting a shoot through umbrella (the strobist blog advises them), but I think a soft box might be in order after Phil's advice. I suspect it's going to take a LOT of trial and error and tears, but...

    Off-camera flash for portraiture

I personally thought of using the slave mode, but it seems messy to try to sync to the on-camera flash. I may be wrong about that, but for 24 quid I thought going wireless would be cleaner (once you add more flashes, you can slave those to your first off-camera flash). Yes, I think you'll need...

    Off-camera flash for portraiture

If you're getting a yn560 you can get a pair of wireless triggers for about 24 quid. Look for yongnuo rf603c for a canon. You won't get TTL so you'll need to learn to manual flash, but that's possibly a good thing! (I'm a flash newbie, just ordered the above so just starting out. )

Compact Flash cards, why so expensive?

Used to be the other way around, but way more cameras take SD these days, so economies of scale. I guess a smaller reason is there's much more circuitry in a CF card as well.

Ebay lens quality... would you accept this??

Any sensible seller would never sell to someone who picks up. Because the buyer can then file a claim saying "I never got my stuff!" and the seller then has no proof it was handed over. PayPay will find in favour of the buyer, and you lose. If it works for you that's great but if you're...

    Alternative to photobox

I've had a recommendation for ProAm Imaging http://www.proamimaging.com/ You need to do a monitor calibration and use their colour profile. I haven't tried them yet but will be doing soon. A search on these boards throws up a few references, all seems positive.

    Peak District

If you can stand a big climb, the Kinder Downfall is an amazing waterfall, if you catch it on the right day the wind catches the water and it goes straight upwards. (You stand on the top of the waterfall) Video here. (It doesn't have to be a horrible gale for it to happen, but it helps)...

    Which graphics tablet?

I've just got my first tablet, a Wacom Fun Pen & Touch. Was a bit put off by the "fun" in the title (after all, I'm a SERIOUS artist  ). Got the medium when I saw that the small version really is small (the usuable area is much smaller than the actually tablet). Only had it a few days...
