I am looking for some guidance please on whether the A7R 1V in APS-C mode would give similar IQ to an A9 but with more reach? I would be looking to use it with a Sony 200-600mm plus 1.4 teleconverter.

The 50-400mm Tamron may come in handy if they come this close.

It will be a small boat specificaly going out whale watching so likely to get reasonably close.

Its the original A9 so unfortunately it doesnt have pre-capture.

Gil, I often carry carry mine exactly as you describe with no issues. I think that a screw in plate/arca swiss attachment connected to a monopod or gimbal is a lot stronger than a standard camera strap.

It sounds to me that your friend does not understand what these photographs mean to you and has unwittenly offended you by treating them as a straight forward business opportunity.
