I use B+W Nd filters and wouldn't think twice about recommending them, they do give photographs a slight warm tone but this can easily be corrected with the camera's WB or on the computer, the ones I use are the multi coated type which are worth the extra cost, they seem to be pretty scratch...
Calumet do a digital shutter timer that displays all the info, it can also be used for time lapse, I been looking into getting one as I have the same problem with the D3100, up until now I have been using the stopwatch which is ok when I remember to start it.
