    Silverstone viewpoints..?

You'll get miles better shots than 95% people there who're trying to shoot 200mph cars from 100 yards with a P&S or iPhone! A couple of years ago I had some back trouble so only took my P&S Canon Ixus to the Italian GP at Monza. I had a really great time and my back didn't suffer, but I just...

    Upgrade from Nikon D5000

    Betcha it doesn't!

    Monopod, Tripod or freehand

I agree with you for some applications (most recently for me on open-Land Rover game drives in the Kruger park in South Africa, when I started off using a monopod on the floor of the vehicle. After the first day I switched to handholding except when the light was bad because I was missing too...

    Advice for panning shots

Yes, I agree with shooting a lot. It's the great advantage of digital. Some people say to set your continuous autofocus to use as few spots as possible, which is said to increase the ability of the camera to keep up. I've also heard that using multi-point predictive 3D autofocus is best...

    Silverstone viewpoints..?

I was talking 35mm equivalent: and I was also referring to what you need to use ideally for shooting from a particular grandstand, which is now further away from the track than it used to be before the changes in the past 2 years. I've used both E-System 4/3 and DX Nikon gear at the 'stone...

    Upgrade from Nikon D5000

...and a couple of other things to consider: Ken Rockwell's got more opinions than are really good for him, but he is right about 'digital rot' - investing in top-quality lenses is pretty safe and you'll always be able to sell them on for a reasonable return. However, digital bodies lose...

    Silverstone viewpoints..?

This is great info, thanks. I haven't been to Silverstone since the BGP last year (and we're going next Saturday & Sunday - yay!) but as you imply the BGP weekend isn't ideal for car photography because of the crowds. I'll certainly be going to some other weekends there later in the year, and...

    Monopod, Tripod or freehand

:D I recommend beta-blockers rather than valium - or if you add a couple of pints at lunchtime you'll be asleep after the 2pm race! If I'm out for a full day I use a monopod because anything from around 300mm up otherwise gets very heavy.

    Snetterton Lotus weekend - Saturday

Looks like nobody did, but I went to the first one last year and had a blast! Tony Fernandes had brought the (proper) Lotus F1 team and access to their pit garage was fantastic, and the historic collection of Loti was simply wonderful. Was it good this year? I'd certainly consider going...

    Upgrade from Nikon D5000

If I'm in time... Here's helpful Nikon upgrade path advice from Thom Hogan: http://bythom.com/upgradepath.htm My three-happeth of advice - don't rule out getting a low-usage second hand D300. Depending on what you'll be using the camera for there are some advantages over a D7k if you...

Royal Mail have lost my D300s!

Good luck! I've used RMSD for many years with no problems at all, and it's very convenient with our friendly local post office at the end of our road for dropping off (and collection, of course, if something was being delivered while we were out). However, there's a fashion these days for...

    Which Sigma Zoom????

There seem to be quite a few 50-500s coming on to eBay at the moment, with sale prices around £4-500 for mint-looking ones with boxes, paperwork etc. I'm very tempted.. That's a lot cheaper than new, but there's always a nagging doubt with non-CaNikon lenses that they might not have stood up...
