Personally I would be looking to get less than 2min... it may not be what you're after but if you look at films and TV that use timelapses, they are usually only a few secs long. Why not try recording a few short ones and editing them together?

Just to note, I don't mind buying a macro specific flash, as my more portrait lenses are fast primes, so don't really need a flash for indoor use

Ahh, another question, what would happen if I added an extension tube to it? I don't quite understand it, but i guess it moves the lens away from the sensor to increase the magnification. On ebay there are some fairly cheap tubes that say they maintain auto focus function and are less than 1/2...
