I (didnt) Won Charlie Waites Landscape Photographer of the Year 2012 LPOTY

Well I think that such excessive viewpoints are ridiculous and I expect you're big enough to completely discount them for the nonsense that they clearly are! By equal measure, I hope that you appreciate the clear parallel's drawn between yours and Peter's images and why people question (same...

Dave (if I may be so familiar), I appreciate your reply and I do agree that you don't deserve any abuse or slagging. You have done nothing 'wrong'. As you say those boats are well shot (and yours and Peter's shots far eclipse my efforts by far) and you are entirely entitled to shoot them...

I (didnt) Won Charlie Waites Landscape Photographer of the Year 2012 LPOTY

Rather than being bitter I think more than a few have been concerned about the apparent 'copying' of another photographers work, especially as the original description said: "I’ve been waiting for a year to do this after seeing Peter Clarke’s great version of it. I hope I’ve...

Personally I love the image and congratulations! I do agree with Alex's post tho.

    Why has it done this?

It's called 'posterisation'. Basically what's happened is that you've overexposed the sun and the area around it to the point where there's no or little data in that area. If not rendered as pure white (all channels blown) it can result in banding and funky colours (where probably the red...

in need of a confidence boost

The advice you're getting here is good. Mark's right, this is a tough shot with the wide dynamic range so don't beat yourself up! The reality is if you wan to get a not too bright sky and no too dark foreground you need an ND grad filter. Yes, you can use HDR or exposure blending but an ND grad...

    Nd filter system

I didn't read it as a ND grad, but you're right to point it out to avoid any confusion. Either way, EC doesn't fulfil the same purpose of either!

    Nd filter system

You would use an ND filter to give you a longer shutter speed than a non-filtered exposure would get you, e.g. if a normal exposure is 1/8 second then a 3 stop ND will give you 1 second for the same aperture/ISO combination. Using EC just tells the camera you want the exposure to be darker or...

    grr

I think you make a valid point in that some of these magazines are a bit "PhotoShop" heavy leading you to think it's the only technique that matters. I always find these magazines very content light at the best of times, and would much rather they spent more time getting into a photographer's...

Problem with Lee 82mm WA Adapter

Correction to my above post - I've now received my new adapter ring (which fits, yay!) and it doesn't say SWA as I thought (my 77mm one does, but anyway). The text on it is "LEE 82mm W/A". The recess is between 1-2mm wider so that the bayonets fit. Right, I'm off out in the rain to try it out...

Problem with Lee 82mm WA Adapter

Unfortunately I don't have another 82mm filter to try it. My 77mm polarizer looks thin enough that it would probably fit into the recess so quite possibly. I think it's probably bad luck I ended up with the old WA version anyway, so you should be ok. That said, I've now got an old 82mm WA...

Are we too careful with our cameras ?

I used to be very worried about it, but recently I've just been taking it out in all weathers. Worth taking sensible precautions and drying it out properly when you get home, but I think you'd have to have some pretty bad luck to do any damage in light-moderate rain. Biggest problem I have is...
