    Raw is it necessary

    RAW is a necessity to me; It's like the choice between shooting film and developing it yourself or sending it off to some automated machine that tries to do what it thinks works based on the film (and then summararily burns the negatives) in my mind.

    How safe is my camera in a messenger bag?

    I keep my camera in a messenger bag all the time, frees me up to keep it on me whenever I'm on campus. (and when going out and doing more specific shoots load up my 'shooting' messenger bag with my flash, tripod, etc.) As long as you aren't throwing it around and keep the lens cap on its fine.
